For a failed craft, check recipe discovery, exact ingredients and grades, available quantities and town requirements. Recent patches improve shortage messages; an unlocked recipe alone does not establish that you can produce it now.

Calculate the entire target batch before buying the missing materials.
Work backward from the failed batch
Start with the exact output you selected. Write down its recipe inputs, the output quantity per batch and the stock currently available for each ingredient. If the recipe makes several outputs at once, a target of one more finished item may still require one whole batch. The material calculator rounds batch counts upward rather than silently crafting a fraction.
Treat an intermediate component as a separate recipe. Check its own inputs before buying the final missing material. Stock already reserved or consumed by other work can make a screenshot outdated; repeat the check with current values. If the message names town level, adding ingredients will not resolve that separate requirement.
